Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Therapy

Millions of Americans suffer from back and neck pain at some time in their lives. This type of pain can interfere with simple activities of daily living such and putting on your shoes, playing sports, or picking up your children and greatly interfere with your quality of life.

In the past, treatment options for serious back conditions were limited to invasive methods such as surgery or injections. Pain management strategies also included physical therapy, traditional chiropractic methods, drugs and acupuncture. Often these procedures afforded slow or no resolution of the problem.

Now patients with severe spinal problems such as bulging or protruding discs, spinal stenosis, facet syndrome, degenerative disc disease and other conditions associated with neck and back pain may be eligible for non-surgical Spinal Decompression therapy.

What is Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Therapy?

Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression is a revolutionary new technology used primarily to treat disc injuries in the neck and in the low back. It utilizes FDA cleared equipment to apply gentle distraction forces followed by periods of relaxation to separate specific spinal structures. This cycle produces a negative pressure within the intervertebral discs. This negative pressure creates a “vacuum effect” and can cause retraction of the herniated or protruding disc material back into place, taking pressure off the affected nerve root and/or thecal sac, thereby alleviating or reducing pain. This “vacuum effect” also promotes the diffusion of water, nutrients and oxygen into disc, helping the disc to heal.

What is the treatment like?

A typical treatment session involves the patient lying comfortably on the decompression table. The table can be customized for each patient to achieve a position that is most comfortable. For the neck, patients lay on their back with a pair of rubber pads behind the neck. For the low back, the patient lies either on their stomach or back with a set of padded straps around the waist and lower chest.

How long is the treatment?

Treatment times vary depending on the patient’s condition and phase of treatment. A typical session lasts between 5 and 30 minutes.

Healing occurs on a microscopic, cellular level each time, but cumulatively over a six to eight week period, the results can be quite dramatic. The treatment is usually quite comfortable and well tolerated, and most patients enjoy the sessions.

Can babies with colic be helped with chiropractic?
It's probably one of the times a parent feels the most helpless. But based on the research, chiropractic and colic relief appear to go hand in glove. With success rates in the mid-90% range, more and more Marlboro parents are seeing a chiropractor. If you have a baby with colic learn how chiropractic may help.
What's the purpose of a surgeon's mask?
When I ask most people in Marlboro this, most think it protects the patient from the doctor's germs. But it's so porous it does little to prevent the passage of germs. We chiropractors don't bother with masks.
